Know Your Rights When Discussing Adoption

*****

When adopting a child you will be creating a whole new world for it to live in. You will want to research all of the rights that you have as an adoptive parent. You may know all the different rights of parents, but when it comes to adoptive parents the rights are slightly different.

When you adopt a child into your family you are adopting that child for life! And as an adoptive parent you will have the same rights and obligations for that child as you would a biological child. You don’t become the child’s parent until all the legal procedures and requirements have been met and the biological parents have signed away their legal rights and obligations for that child. Once completed you have every right that any other parent has, and there is nothing that can take that away. Remember, when the adoption is final, you will then be solely responsible for the child until it reaches adulthood, it will be a part of your family for the rest of its life.

When considering the adoption process you need to keep in mind that different circumstances can have a bearing on how long the process takes. You also need to be prepared for some setbacks, often a biological mother will change her mind at the last minute, and despite how long the process has been going on, until all the legal requirements are completed you have no rights to that particular child, and it might be a case of starting the procedure all over again with a completely different child. I know this may seem a little daunting to start with but you need to be patient. If you really want to adopt a child then the wait will be worth it in the end.

If you are at the point when you know that adoption is right for you, you will want to sign the papers and be given full custody of the child as soon as possible, but remember this is a life we are talking about, and its wellbeing is and always should be the main concern, what happens will affect the child for the rest of its life and yours, so all the proper procedures must be followed and sometimes although frustrating, can take some considerable time. Once everything is signed and sealed and you become the legal guardian of the child, the waiting and frustrations will give way to feelings of great joy and happiness that come with being the proud parents of a new member of your family, and you can also be assured that no one can take that away from you.
