Adoptions can go wrong and what you should do
*****
Even though there are many things that might concern you when contemplating adoption, you will want to make sure that you understand the most common problems.
*****
One of the biggest problems is that people are impatient, and due to this they try to rush through everything and in so doing they often fill in forms with the wrong information, miss some important details altogether and then when it all blows up in their face they get upset. You need to remember this is one of the most important things you are ever likely to undertake and as such you need to spend time checking and rechecking everything to make absolutely certain you haven’t missed any details or filled in any dates wrongly, although these are only small details they are very important and if they are incorrect they can delay proceedings enormously and also cost you a fortune in additional lawyers bills.

Also, the biological mother can have a change of heart at the last minute, and try and get the child back. If you haven’t signed the forms, or if you haven’t completed the waiting periods, it is always a realistic fear that the biological mother is going to change her mind and that she will want to keep the baby herself, or go with another person to adopt her child. If this happens to you, there is nothing you can do about it. However, you shouldn’t let this upset put you off adoption, even if you found it very distressing, it is not something that occurs regularly during the adoption process, but as with everything in life difficulties will arise.

When this happens to a couple or single person trying to adopt, they are put back into the potential adoptive parent pool. However, depending on which agency you are with, you may find yourself at the bottom of the list and others will adopt before you. In some agencies, you maintain your position and are given first priority when a new baby becomes available, so this is something that you might want to enquire about when selecting an agency.

A lot of people feel very low when they are placed on a waiting list, because it can feel like you are on the list forever. Many waiting lists are long because the agency, having the best interests of the child foremost, want to match the children with the best homes possible. Some people contemplating adoption have gone to foreign countries in an attempt to adopt a child more quickly but unfortunately this has often proved not only very expensive but very difficult due to foreign laws and legislation and often there is a problem with emigration when trying to return home with a foreign child. When all things are considered you are better to be patient and wait in line even if it does seem like forever, and if you decide that going abroad is worth the expense and effort make sure of all the facts at home and at the embassy of the country you are thinking of adopting a child from before you go flying off half way round the world on what could prove to be a lost cause.
